Adoptable horses at Second Chance Ranch

These horses are in various stages of training and available for adoption. We welcome potential adoptors to be a part of the training process if they choose. We require that any adoptor ride and visit the horse several times before making a final decision. We also like to visit where the horse will be housed. If the horse turns out to not be a good match for you, per contract, we purchase the horse back. For these reasons, we do not adopt outside of Washington or Oregon.

Note: Adoptions fees are based on the horse's health, soundness and training, typically ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. All fees are negotiable.

Classy

Breed:
Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 5 years
Height: 15.3h

Classy is by Classic Sky, a Canadian champion with career earnings of over $3.3 million (he won or placed in nearly every single race).

Classy raced in California and Washington/Emerald Downs. He was not injured. He actually won his last race, however, had to have a procedure on a blood vessel that would prevent him from racing, but not from any other sport.

He is a very quiet and affectionate horse who would make a very good trail mount, or western pleasure horse. He did not show interest in jumping when we introduce him to that - it's something he might pick up when he gains a little more confidence. He is sound enough do to anything.

Classy is green in terms of learning arena work, but very quiet on the trails. Not a hot or easily spooked horse at all.

Breed:
Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 7 years
Height: 16.1h

VIDEO

His registered name is "Allineedisrehab", sired by Detox, out of Allineedisamiracle. He has been off the track since 2005 and is sound. Cassanova has recently discovered jumping. The photos above are his first time out on a course, ever! He went through the entire novice course perfectly and loved it. He is bold and will go through water, ditches, and jump anything you put in front of him.

Casanova is a one-man horse. If you are kind to him, he will walk through fire for you. He is brave on the outside, but a big sensitive marshmellow on the inside. He needs a partner who will show affection and give lots of praise!

Cassanova is currently in training with Annie at our Grand Mound location.

Bedford

Breed:
Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 8 years
Height: 16.2h

Bedford Road is by Miesques Son and out of Lake Brook, making him a grandson of the great "Salt Lake (Deputy Minister)."

Bedford had a stall accident at the race track which resulted in a broken distal sesamoid bone. He was sent to a specialist in Oregon for surgery - Dr. Laura Palmer performed a miracle. Bedford is completely sound and has been riding trails and western pleasure for over a year.

He does require a confident and experienced rider. Bedford is a kind and affectionate horse, but he is also an athlete and a powerful mover.

RIO

Breed:
Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 2 years

Rio is a Washington bred gelding who was at the WTBA Winter Sale - he was one of many who didn't get a bid. Racing is not in Rio's future due to his size. Although well proportioned and very healthy, at 2 yrs old he is still the size of a yearling. Probably a slow grower...  I expect he will top out at around 15.3 when full grown.

Rio needs a couple of years to grow, and in the meantime, an experienced handler that can keep up on his ground manners. He was gelded a few months ago, and is currently very sweet and easily managed.

Ajax

Breed:
Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 13 years
Height: 18.2h

Ajax has a racing pedigree, but was never raced. He was given to SCR by his owner, who at the time was receiving treatment for Cancer.

He has dressage schooling and is very sound, but his best job right now would be as a trail horse and companion. Ajax needs a lot of personal attention and a relaxing environment. He is a very hard keeper (meaning he eats a lot of groceries!) - a home with a lot of pasture would help. He does best with a lot of turnout, but stalled at night.

Please email for more info on Ajax.

Nevada Swifty

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 5 years
Height: 15.3h
This little cutie pie is loads of fun! He is by Soft Gold, and expected to grow to at least 16h. He was in training at the track but never raced and was taken off the track sound. Swifty has a good mind, super flashy movement, honest and willing worker. Easy to get along with! Hunter/jumper prospect or trails.

Gentlestone

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 8 years
Height: 16.1h

He is by Gentleman. He had a minor right front suspensory injury but is sound now.  Good dressage prospect.

Gentlestone loved his job, and is athletically minded. His career earnings were over $100k and he was said to be the best horse of the year by famed Jockey Gary Stevens.

Hickory Pete

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 7 years
Height: 16.1h

Pete is by Ordway and out of Sugar Kriss. He raced at San Anita and Hollywood Park before coming to Emerald Downs. He retired with a minor suspensory injury and is currently sound. Would be great for trails and lower level dressage. Pete is Athletic and has great presence!

BEFORE                                            ONE MONTH LATER

Slewpy

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 14 years
Height: 16h

His registered name is Slewp Walker, by Skywalker who had career earnings of over $2.2 million. His dam was Slewping Beauty from the Seattle Slew line. Walker was Breeder's Cup Nominated.

Somehow, this sweet boy left the track and ended up with an animal hoarder in Oregon. The Sheriff's Dept. confiscated Slewp Walker and a number of other animals and gave them to a couple in Washington, claiming they were starting up a rescue organization. AGAIN, those people turned out to be hoarders and had all their animals confiscated - this time 400lbs underweight and covered in lice. Twice, Slewp was taken from an abusive home.

Finally, at 14 yrs old, he landed here at Second Chance Ranch. It is obvious this horse has seen a lot. Many of his "herd" and friends died of starvation or illnesses. He won't forget what he went through, but he also will never forget or take for granted the love and attention he is receiving now.

He appears to be sound, and has beautiful confirmation. once his weight is back, and he has had time to regain health and confidence - he will most likely make a wonderful trail mount!

Mac

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 10 years
Height: 17h

Mac is a massively built 17-hand thoroughbred.  He is gorgeous and sweet. He never raced, but was badly injured by a trainer, and as a result of his injuries has arthritis in one hock.  He is perfectly sound for trails and lower level dressage. He has great feet, recently shod, up to date on teeth, vaccines and worming. His owner has taken impeccable care of him.

Mac is extremely affectionate and will bond strongly with a human who treats him well.  He is not hot, but he is a lot of horse. He is not suited for a beginner or timid rider. He has excellent ground manners and has had a lot of ground training.

Please call or email for more info!

DREAMER

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 4 years
Height: 17h

Dreamer is by the legendary Slewdledo - one of my favorite Thoroughbred pedigrees.

At 3 years old Dreamer was already towering 17h tall! His racing career was cut short by an injury to the knee. He is recovering nicely and very comfortable, however we are not sure what his abilities will be in the future. This gentle giant has a heart to match his size. He is full of life and personality - Dreamer adds life to the barn.

We anticipate that he will be a permanent resident - and I am in no hurry to see him go. However, if the perfect situation were to come up for him, we will consider adopting him out.

WESTERN JOURNEY

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 8 years
Height: 16.1h

Western Journey is by Gone West (Mr. Prospector) and out of Sweet and Low (Seattle Slew). He was taken off the race track at Emerald Downs 4 years ago...a Rolex quality jumper, but after a year of jump training his career was halted due to Ringbone in both front pasterns. He was given back to the race trainer who pastured him for the next three years. Westin (stall name) came to SCR a month ago and we xrayed to evaluate his status of soundness. Unfortunately, the ringbone has gotten worse.

Westin is otherwise very healthy, very smart, sweet, and has a great personality...good with other horses. He needs a pasture pet and possibly light trail riding home. We love this horse to peices! He deserves a person of his own to love and care for him.

We are currently looking into all veterinary treatments to keep him comfortable.

 LORD'S SECRET

Breed: Thoroughbred
Gender: Gelding
Age: 20 years
Height: 15.3h

Registered name is Lord's Secret. He goes by Secret. his sire was Lord of All, the first stallion by Seattle Slew. Secret was one of the first grandkids of Seattle Slew. He is sound but we are not sure of is level of training or riding capabilities yet. If he is adopted out, we would look for a home where he could be a "pet". Secret is very affectionate, smart (like all Seattle Slew kids) and has a great sense of humor. We are not in a hurry to have him leave, but if the perfect person comes along and he falls in love with you, we are open to considering a free lease.

Logan has never raced.  He has a sweet, kind disposition.  Good around kids, dogs, and busy environments.  He is good with other horses in a pasture setting.  His best job would be light riding and turn out would be a plus.  His temperament truly is wonderful, easy to lunge, trailer, ground ties--he has had a fair amount of training over the years.  Logan has arthritis in both hocks and in his front right pastern (the pastern was probably an injury).  The vet suggested treating him with bute on days when he is uncomfortable.  He was jumping with his prior owner and wouldn't stay sound--so he's not a candidate for performance riding.  Both the vet at Pilchuck and the trainer are willing to have a conversation with anyone that is interested in adopting Logan.
